A winter in Phuket: planning a one-to-six-month stay without surprises
A winter escape starts with an appealing thought: “Why not live by the sea for a while?” Less photogenic questions soon follow: on what basis, for how many days, and who returns the deposit? I prefer to settle those before buying the sun lounger.

First confirm the permitted stay for your passport and purpose of travel. Then align the lease, insurance and transport with those dates. TDAC is an arrival card: it neither replaces a visa nor extends your stay.
Visa validity and permission to stay are different things
Requirements depend on nationality, where you apply and your purpose of travel. “Everyone can stay for six months now” is a poor basis for non-refundable accommodation. Begin with the official Thai e-Visa portal and the consulate responsible for your particular application. source ↗
DTV is a useful illustration of the distinction. The Thai Embassy in Singapore page, updated on 7 September 2026, describes a five-year multiple-entry visa with up to 180 days per entry, and the possibility of a further extension of up to 180 days subject to immigration approval. Five-year validity does not mean permission to live continuously in Thailand for five years. source ↗
That same page covers applications by Singapore citizens and permanent residents. Its document checklist cannot simply be applied to every applicant from every country. Before paying for the trip, obtain the current requirements from your own application post, including evidence of funds and permitted activities.
A well-planned winter stay has a departure date in the calendar before it becomes a surprise at passport control.
TDAC: a short form with an important distinction
The official FAQ says foreign travellers complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within the three days before arrival, including the arrival date. Children also require it; transit without passing immigration is among the exceptions. A new entry requires a new card. source ↗
- Use the official tdac.immigration.go.th website: submission is free.
- Check passport details, the journey and the first accommodation address.
- Save the confirmation so that it opens on your phone without internet.
- Check your visa or other applicable entry basis separately: the arrival card does not replace it.
One, three or six months: more than a night count
| Planned stay | First decisions | Payment terms to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 month | Location, move-in readiness and internet | Cleaning, utilities and cancellation |
| 3 months | Workspace, daily transport and healthcare | Deposit, meter charges and early departure |
| 6 months | Permission to remain throughout; school if needed | Lease duration, extension and repair obligations |
A short initial booking lets you test a neighbourhood on an ordinary working day. Decide about extending after trying the commute and internet connection. Agree on the extension price in advance, though: “we will stay if we like it” does not reserve the apartment for high season.

Calculate the entire stay
Take an illustrative model: 75,000 baht in recurring monthly costs for a couple, 40,000 baht in flights for two and a 60,000-baht refundable deposit. The flight and deposit figures are assumptions, not market quotes. Replace insurance and other allowances with your own costs.
| Period | Recurring costs + flights | Deposit tied up separately | Total funds for the period |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | 115,000 ฿ | 60,000 ฿ | 175,000 ฿ |
| 3 months | 265,000 ฿ | 60,000 ฿ | 325,000 ฿ |
| 6 months | 490,000 ฿ | 60,000 ฿ | 550,000 ฿ |
Do not add the first month’s rent twice if it is already in the monthly budget. Temporary accommodation, storage back home and money lost on cancelled bookings are easier to overlook. Those little lines do enjoy getting together to become a large one.
The last check before departure
- Your entry basis, permitted duration and conditions for planned activities have been checked against official requirements.
- Your first accommodation address and host’s contact details are saved.
- The insurance policy covers the destination, trip duration and planned activities; you understand how to request assistance.
- Accommodation cancellation and deposit-return terms are in writing.
- The end dates of your permitted stay, insurance and lease have been compared.
Keep documents in two accessible places and share your itinerary with someone close to you. That unglamorous folder is a wonderful way to spend the rest of the trip thinking about the sea rather than searching five message threads for a policy number.

Frequently asked questions
Is TDAC a visa?
No. It is a digital arrival card. It does not grant additional time in Thailand or replace the applicable visa or entry basis.
Can everyone come for six months?
There is no universal answer. The permitted duration depends on your passport, entry basis and compliance with its conditions. Check before committing to a long lease.
Why is the deposit shown separately from expenses?
It reduces your available cash, but is not a final cost if returned in full. Planning requires both figures.
