The cost of living in Phuket: three budgets beyond the holiday glow
In Phuket, you can have an inexpensive lunch and make a very expensive decision that you deserve a beautiful day. Usually both happen before dinner. That is why I prefer a budget with actual line items.

Our illustrative monthly budgets are 43,000 baht for one person, 75,000 for a couple and 155,000 for a family with one schoolchild. These are worked examples, not averages or guaranteed budgets. Replace the assumptions with your own rental, insurance and school quotes.
What public price data can tell you
The June 2026 Numbeo snapshot puts a one-bedroom apartment outside the centre at approximately 15,640 baht per month, and one in the centre at 23,520. For three bedrooms, the figures are 40,525 and 65,911 respectively. An inexpensive restaurant meal in the sample is 150 baht. source ↗
These data have limits: users contribute them, “the centre” does not mean Bang Tao, and a long lease is not the same as a New Year stay. The figures provide an initial reference. I would not assess a particular apartment or sign its lease on the strength of an online average.
Three scenarios, with the assumptions visible
| Expense | One person | Couple | Family: 2 adults + child |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent — assumption | 18,000 | 30,000 | 45,000 |
| Utilities and connectivity — allowance | 3,000 | 4,000 | 5,000 |
| Groceries and meals — assumption | 12,000 | 20,000 | 28,000 |
| Transport — allowance | 4,000 | 10,000 | 12,000 |
| Insurance / healthcare — allowance | 3,000 | 5,000 | 10,000 |
| School — illustrative example | — | — | 40,000 |
| Sport, leisure and other costs — allowance | 3,000 | 6,000 | 15,000 |
| Total | 43,000 | 75,000 | 155,000 |
The family scenario shows how much education changes the total. With two schoolchildren, adding another food allowance will not be enough. Calculate tuition, admission fees, transport and any language support separately. The insurance allowance is not an insurance quote either: age and coverage can significantly change the price.
The first month costs more than a normal month
Your monthly budget and your moving fund do different jobs. One covers rent, food and journeys. The other includes flights, temporary accommodation, deposits, household purchases, visa costs and admission fees. A refundable deposit may not be a final expense, but it still removes real money from your available balance.
| Item | Calculation | Baht |
|---|---|---|
| First month’s rent | 30,000 × 1 | 30,000 |
| Deposit under an illustrative lease | 30,000 × 2 | 60,000 |
| Settling-in allowance | Assumption | 15,000 |
| Total before other expenses | 30,000 + 60,000 + 15,000 | 105,000 |
A moving budget is doing its job if there is still room for living after you have bought the mop.
Give your budget a stress test
Try adding 10,000 baht to rent and 5,000 to transport. The couple’s budget rises from 75,000 to 90,000 baht: an increase of 20%. This is not a prediction of price rises. It tests how sensitive your plan is to two choices: where you live and how you get around.
If you earn in another currency, build the core budget in baht, then convert it at the actual exchange rate, including fees. “You can do everything here on a thousand dollars” ages particularly quickly when a school invoice arrives.

How to build your own budget in a week
- Collect several written rental offers for the same dates and lease length.
- Ask for example utility bills for the property.
- Obtain insurance quotes with comparable coverage.
- Check the prices of your usual groceries, not just one Thai lunch.
- Calculate the cost of your actual routes.
- Set aside money you cannot spend: deposits, a return-home fund and emergency reserves.
I would judge comfort by the breathing room left after ordinary commitments. Life by the sea is more enjoyable when every café visit does not require a negotiation with your banking app.

Frequently asked questions
Are these figures minimum living budgets?
No. They are transparent examples with stated assumptions. You might spend less or more; your particular home, school, transport and insurance determine the result.
Does a deposit count as a monthly expense?
A refundable deposit is normally separated out as money temporarily tied up. You need it for the move in addition to your recurring living expenses.
