Where to live in Phuket: finding a neighbourhood that fits your life

Choosing a Phuket neighbourhood from a sunset photograph is a little like choosing a husband from his holiday photos. Lovely lighting. But I would still like to know what an ordinary Tuesday looks like.

The short answer

Start with three regular destinations: school or work, everyday shopping and somewhere you enjoy spending time. Then choose the street and home. A neighbourhood name alone cannot guarantee quiet, an easy commute or a walkable route to the beach.

Your Tuesday comes before the view

I suggest choosing a home around your schedule. If your child needs to get to school five days a week, that journey matters more than the Sunday trip to your favourite beach. If you work from home, check daytime noise, the internet connection and space for calls. The island should fit your life without requiring you to rearrange it every morning.

Even an extra 20 minutes each way adds up to 14 hours and 40 minutes over 22 working days: 20 × 2 × 22 ÷ 60. This is a calculation for an illustrative journey, not a traffic measurement. It does explain why a convenient address can sometimes be worth more than another bedroom.

A good location has a very practical quality: it gives you time back.

Five areas to explore first

An editorial comparison to guide your first viewings
AreaWhat to considerWhat to check in person
Bang Tao / Cherng TalayThe west coast around Laguna and Boat Avenue; an option for combining beach access with a well-developed range of services. The actual exit road, walking distance to the beach, construction and the journey to your chosen school.
RawaiThe south of the island; compare daily life around Sai Yuan and the waterfront on the same exploratory visit.A waterfront address is not necessarily beside a swimming beach. Check transport options.
Nai HarnThe southern part of the island, with access to Nai Harn Beach. The route from the particular property and everyday amenities beyond the beach.
KamalaThe west coast, with homes near the sea and on the hillsides. The climb to the property, walkability, access to services and seasonal noise.
KathuAn inland location for journeys towards Phuket Town and your chosen school.Actual travel time to the sea and road conditions in rain. This is not a beach location.

Every area name contains many different streets. Two apartments described as being “in Bang Tao” can offer very different daily lives. Compare the map pin, the entrance to the development and the actual route to the places you need. A beautiful neighbourhood name cannot shorten a journey.

Look at the roads behind the address

Phuket Smart Bus connects the airport with the west coast as far as Rawai; the published single fare on this line is 100 baht. It is useful, but a route through your neighbourhood does not mean a stop outside your door. Check the map and current timetable first. source ↗ source ↗

In August 2026, The Phuket News reported police accounts of Patong congestion in which some journeys took almost two hours. This is neither an island-wide average nor a forecast for your address. It is a reason to test your route at the time you will actually use it. source ↗

How to test a neighbourhood on a short visit

  • Visit on a weekday morning and try the school or work journey.
  • Return in the evening: listen to nearby venues, traffic and building equipment.
  • Walk to the shop. Actually walk it, rather than drawing a line on a map.
  • Test the apartment’s internet and mobile reception in the rooms.
  • Ask about construction and flooding, then compare the answers with a site inspection.

For a first visit, I would choose two contrasting addresses, perhaps on the west coast and in the south, and live an ordinary day in each. Leave room between excursions: a packed holiday itinerary is remarkably good at hiding an inconvenient home.

Choosing without a “best neighbourhood” ranking

Make separate lists of essentials and preferences. “My child can get to school without an extremely early start” might be essential; “a glimpse of the sea from the window” might be a lovely extra. Ten beautiful photographs cannot make up for a failed essential.

A family, a couple and someone arriving alone may choose entirely different addresses. My approach is to remove the options that complicate everyday life, then choose the home you are genuinely pleased to return to.

Frequently asked questions

Which Phuket neighbourhood is best for a family?

The one where the school, home and daily journey work together. Start with the school, then compare specific addresses. There is no single winner for every family.

Can I choose an apartment by neighbourhood alone?

No. Check the street, development entrance, noise, vehicle access and walking routes. A neighbourhood is too large to describe the conditions at every home.
