Schools in Phuket: choosing the education, the budget and a home nearby
It is easy to fall in love with the swimming pool on a school tour. I understand. But your child will do the swimming, while the adults handle the admission fees and morning departures. Let us look at the whole picture.

First confirm the curriculum, year group, availability and admission terms. Then calculate the full first year, language support and travel. Published annual tuition is one part of the decision, not the total cost of a family move.
Does the school fit your child?
I would begin with the language of instruction, your child’s previous curriculum and the likely next step. A family staying for one academic year may need something different from a family staying until graduation. “International” alone does not explain how your child will enter the programme or what happens on returning home.
- How does the school assign a year group when transferring from another system?
- How is English assessed, and what does any required support cost?
- Which examinations and qualifications are offered in the senior years?
- Is there a place in the required year group, and when is enrolment confirmed?
- How does the school communicate with parents and support the transition?
Two published fee schedules
| Stage | BISP | HeadStart |
|---|---|---|
| Early years | Nursery / Reception: 489,000 | Preschool: 347,000; EY–Reception: 360,000 |
| Primary | Years 1–3: 750,000 | Years 1–6: 480,000 |
| Early secondary | Years 7–8: 977,900 | Years 7–9: 540,000 |
The difference between the selected primary tuition figures is 270,000 baht per year: 750,000 − 480,000. Spread over 12 months, that is 22,500 baht. This compares particular fees, not which school is “better”. A lower fee does not always mean a more convenient option; a higher fee does not automatically mean a better fit for your child.
Why the first year costs more than tuition
| Payment | Baht | Nature of payment |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | 750,000 | Full academic year |
| Application fee | 6,000 | Non-refundable |
| Placement fee | 200,000 | Non-refundable; family with one pupil |
| Bond | 150,000 | Refundable subject to conditions |
| Total listed commitments | 1,106,000 | Before additional services |
Ask separately about transport, uniforms, trips, examinations, a laptop and additional activities. HeadStart’s 2026/27 schedule lists EAL language support at 60,000 baht per year. Do not add it automatically for every child: the school determines whether it is required. source ↗
The most useful school tour ends with a clear written breakdown, as well as a photograph of the pool.
The school run is part of the family timetable
BISP’s campus is in Koh Kaew. An apartment beside your favourite beach and an easy school routine are therefore separate questions. Visit the school on an ordinary school day, checking drop-off arrangements, parking and the route from your proposed home.
An assumed extra 30 minutes in the morning and 30 in the evening adds up to 20 hours over 20 school days. The arithmetic is simple; the effect on a child’s routine is rather less abstract. Ask the school bus service about the full journey time to your stop as well as its price.

An order of decisions that reduces expensive mistakes
My sequence would be: shortlist schools, speak to admissions, visit and complete the child’s assessment, obtain a written offer, calculate the full budget, then commit to long-term housing. Choose a home around a confirmed plan, rather than a hope that a place in the right class will appear.
Give your child the chance to see the school. Adults read tables and compare programmes; a child notices the teacher, atmosphere and people they will spend each day with. Both parts of the research matter.

Frequently asked questions
Can I compare schools on price alone?
No. Compare curriculum, age group, language support, admission terms, additional charges and the journey.
Is a school deposit a non-refundable cost?
Not necessarily. In the BISP example, the bond is refundable subject to the school’s conditions. Include it in the cash you need, but separate it from non-refundable fees.
