Moving to Phuket with a dog: travel, housing and everyday life
Travelling with dogs is something I know first-hand. Bonya, Yuki and I used to fly abroad together often, so document checks, packing lists and the familiar “have we got everything?” became part of our routine. I want to share what that taught me: it can feel like a lot at first, but preparation becomes much more manageable when you take it one step at a time.

Before buying a non-refundable ticket, confirm entry requirements with the airport’s animal quarantine service, carriage with the airline, and accommodation in writing with both the owner and building management. Three separate checks, taken in order: one approval does not replace the others.
A personal note: Bonya, Umi and Yuki
As I write in September 2026, I have two dogs: Umi, my three-month-old dachshund, and Yuki, my two-year-old miniature pinscher. There was also Bonya, whom we sadly lost at the age of seventeen.
Bonya and Yuki were my frequent companions on trips abroad. We went through the document checks, the lists and the preparations countless times. So this subject is part of my own life, and that is the experience I want to share with you.
My message is reassuring: travelling with a dog need not be frightening. There are formalities to take care of, and they become easier to handle when you break them down. One: check the requirements for your route and put the dates in your calendar. Two: prepare the documents and confirm the flight arrangements. Three: check the accommodation and pack what your dog needs. You do not have to solve everything at once.
Below is the practical side of that approach, with current source links to check against your own journey. My experience helps me organise the process; I still check the rules for each new trip.
The route and requirements come before the lovely travel crate
Import requirements depend on the departure country, the animal’s documents and the point of entry. Start with the Department of Livestock Development and the current requirements of the arrival airport’s Animal Quarantine Station. The general DLD page explains the import process, but confirm the particular documents for your route. source ↗
One example shows why a calendar matters. The Thai consulate in Los Angeles guidance, updated on 2 February 2026, says travellers importing from the US should apply for a permit at least 7 and no more than 60 days before entry. Processing takes 5–7 Thai working days, with about 30 days’ preparation recommended. Primary vaccinations involve waiting periods, including 21 days. This is an example for a US departure, not a ready-made checklist for Russia or every other country. source ↗
- Tell the departure-country authorities and veterinary service your actual entry airport. Arrival in Phuket and a connection involving entry clearance elsewhere are different routes.
- Check the animal’s identification, vaccination records and health-certificate requirements.
- Confirm each document’s validity against the arrival date.
- Check transit-country rules if they apply to your route.
Starting 6–8 weeks ahead is a useful organisational buffer, not a universal legal deadline. A pet that has not yet met the veterinary requirements may need longer. A calendar helps more than someone’s confident “our friends sorted it all in three days”.
What to get from the airline in writing

| Ask about | The answer you need |
|---|---|
| Method of carriage | Cabin, accompanied checked baggage or cargo on your particular flights |
| Pet and container | Accepted weight, breed and dimensions |
| Space on every segment | Confirmed carriage, including any partner airline |
| Full price and changes | Fare, fees and change terms if documents are delayed |
One logo on a ticket does not guarantee identical rules across all operating carriers. Do not buy a crate from a photograph alone: confirm the carriage requirements and make sure the size suits your dog. Discuss health and flight preparation with a vet who knows your pet.
“Pet-friendly” starts the conversation
A listing might allow a small dog while building rules restrict lift or common-area access. Before paying a deposit, agree on your particular pet in writing: size, number of animals, restrictions, charges and responsibility for damage. Both the owner’s and management’s requirements matter.
| Item | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Permission | The lease and building rules allow your pet |
| Money | Any separate deposit, cleaning fee and deduction terms |
| Walks | The route from the door, lighting and pavement condition |
| Home | Fencing, gaps around gates, shade and a cool indoor space |
| Time away | Whether boarding arrangements or sitter visits are permitted |
I am not labelling particular developments dog-friendly without checking their current rules. Even two apartments in one building can have different owner conditions. You need an answer about your agreement, not somebody else’s successful booking.
An open budget model for your particular dog
| Item | Example allowance |
|---|---|
| Food | 2,500 ฿ |
| Routine care and prevention: savings allowance | 1,000 ฿ |
| Grooming and supplies | 800 ฿ |
| Sitter / boarding: reserve | 2,000 ฿ |
| Total | 6,300 ฿ |
Transport, the crate, documents and any housing deposit are additional. With an assumed extra deposit of 10,000 baht, the first month requires 16,300 baht plus the move itself. A refundable deposit should not be counted as a recurring monthly expense.
It helps to split the budget into regular purchases, moving preparations and accessible funds for unexpected care. The last part cannot be determined by the size of the food bowl: discuss your pet’s health with the vet and ask the chosen clinic about its terms.
Your dog has a neighbourhood too
During the first days, I would keep familiar routines and explore nearby routes gradually. Look for cooler walking times, shade and access to water; discuss suitable exercise, parasite protection and local risks with your vet. Put together a list of clinics and an urgent-care contact in advance.
- Check the rules of each beach, café or park rather than assuming dogs are allowed.
- Arrange pet transport before booking a taxi, rather than announcing your passenger at the car.
- Arrange an introduction before boarding and leave written care instructions.
- Keep veterinary documents and the owner’s contact details with the carrier.
A good pet-friendly address makes an ordinary walk easy. The words in the listing will not take the dog out for you.
Useful to know
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the US guidance when flying from Russia?
No. The US timelines illustrate why preparation matters, but confirm documents and export procedures for your departure country and Thai entry point.
Is a pet-friendly label in a listing enough?
No. Obtain written permission for your particular pet and check both the owner’s agreement and the building management rules.
Is 6,300 baht the average cost of keeping a dog in Phuket?
No. It is a transparent budget model with assumed amounts. Replace them with your food, care and boarding costs. One-off flight expenses are excluded.
