5 restaurants in Phuket Old Town for a very good afternoon — or evening

Old Town has a persuasive habit of turning “just a walk” into lunch, coffee and an unexpectedly serious conversation about dinner. I would allow for this in the schedule.

The short answer

Choose One Chun or Raya for a meal centred on Southern Thai dishes, Tu Kab Khao for a Phang Nga Road stop, Blue Elephant for a more formal occasion and Kopitiam by Wilai for an easy Thalang Road break. All five belong to the historic centre, rather than the much larger area often labelled Phuket Town online.

This selection is organised around food, setting and the kind of visit I would plan. It is not a walking challenge to complete all five. Old Town rewards an appetite; it does not require an endurance event. Pick one main meal, then leave the rest of the afternoon a little room to surprise you.

1. One Chun — begin with Southern Thai flavour

One Chun’s guide description highlights family recipes, a vintage interior and Southern Thai cooking. Mu hong — slow-cooked pork belly — is one of the dishes to consider when looking at the menu. The address is on Thep Krasatti Road, at the eastern side of the historic streets. source ↗

I would order for contrast: something rich, something fresh, rice and a dish with a little edge. It is tempting to choose five things that all sound gloriously intense; by the third spoonful, a vegetable can become the most popular person at the table. Tell the staff your comfort with chilli before the kitchen starts.

2. Raya — a Phuket classic with a proper story

Raya traces its beginning to Kularb Jesadawal in 1994. Its yellow heritage house on Dibuk Road is the setting for Phuket dishes including crab curry, mu hong and prawns in tamarind sauce. The restaurant’s own history gives this choice more substance than a pretty balcony alone. source ↗

This is the table I would consider for visitors who want a clear introduction to Phuket cooking. Build the meal around two or three dishes you can discuss and share, rather than ordering every famous item at once. For a larger group, ask the team about portions. The difference between generosity and a table with no remaining surface area is surprisingly small.

3. Tu Kab Khao — make Phang Nga Road your lunch address

Tu Kab Khao occupies a heritage building at 8 Phang Nga Road and serves Southern Thai food. The Tourism Authority of Thailand documents both the restaurant and its setting. source ↗

I would use it as the anchor for a visit built around the southern Old Town streets: look around first, sit down while you still have energy to enjoy lunch, then decide how much more exploring you feel like doing. The practical luxury here is having a proper meal in the middle of your day. If everyone is hungry already, that is a good moment to stop debating the next photograph.

4. Blue Elephant — lunch with a sense of occasion

Blue Elephant’s Phuket restaurant occupies the Phra Pitak Chinpracha mansion on Krabi Road. The branch presents Thai cooking with dishes including Peranakan-style king mackerel and crab curry with turmeric and betel leaf. source ↗

I would choose this when the room matters as much as the route: a family celebration, visiting parents or a meal with time to settle in. Ask about the current à la carte and set-menu options before fixing your budget. A handsome mansion is a strong opening line; what follows should still suit the people at your table.

5. Kopitiam by Wilai — a gentler pause on Thalang Road

Kopitiam by Wilai is at 18 Thalang Road, with a traditional café-style interior and a menu of Thai food, drinks and desserts documented by the tourism authority. source ↗

This would be my less formal stop: the place to sit down, compare the things you noticed on the walk and decide whether you are still hungry or simply enjoying being out. There is room in a good food itinerary for a modest, comfortable meal. Not every afternoon needs a tasting menu and a wardrobe discussion.

How I would organise the day

  • Choose the meal first, then build your walk around its address.
  • Check opening hours and reserve directly where possible; a saved list does not hold a table.
  • Allow time to browse after lunch instead of scheduling a second substantial meal immediately.
  • For a celebratory evening, choose Blue Elephant or Raya and ask which room suits your group.
One memorable meal is a better souvenir than five rushed check-ins.

Useful to know

Frequently asked questions

Are Phuket Town and Old Town the same area?

Old Town is the historic centre within Phuket Town. A broad town label on a review platform does not mean a restaurant is among the historic streets.

Which would suit a more formal meal?

I would start with Blue Elephant for its mansion setting, then check the menu, room and service for your date. source ↗

Can I visit all five in one day?

You can save all five addresses, but I would choose one main meal and enjoy the town around it. This is a choice of restaurants, not a five-course walking itinerary.
