Healthcare in Phuket: hospitals, insurance and a plan for the unexpected
Nobody moves to an island for the pleasure of assembling a medical documents folder. Having one does make the other plans feel calmer. Here are practical steps and verifiable contacts worth saving while everything is going well.

Identify an appropriate nearby provider, save a round-the-clock hospital contact and your insurer’s assistance number. A clinic near your home does not necessarily offer 24-hour care, and insurance does not automatically cover every treatment.
Three hospitals, with actual addresses
Bangkok Hospital Network’s official directory lists three facilities in Phuket. This table helps you find a contact; it does not rank quality or describe the island’s entire healthcare system. Public hospitals and other private providers are outside this selection. source ↗
| Facility | Address / area | Telephone |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok Hospital Phuket | 2/1 Hongyok Utis Road, Talat Yai | +66 76 254 425 |
| Bangkok Hospital Siriroj | 44 Chaloem Phrakiat Rama 9 Road, Wichit | +66 76 361 888 |
| Dibuk Hospital | 89/8–9 Moo 2, Chaofa Road, Wichit | +66 76 298 298 |
Bangkok Hospital Phuket’s Emergency & Trauma Center states that it operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Its listed contact is +66 76 254 425, extensions 1060–1062. This is a particular institution’s telephone number, not Thailand’s nationwide emergency number. source ↗
A local clinic and round-the-clock care serve different needs
For a planned visit, a branch near your neighbourhood may be more convenient. Bangkok Phuket Clinic’s official schedule lists Rawai as open daily from 08:00 to 20:00, telephone 080 272 2622, and Kamala from 09:00 to 20:00, telephone 093 576 7070. Confirm hours and availability of the service by phone. source ↗
Do not assume a small clinic keeps the same hours as its parent hospital. If the situation needs urgent care, do not wait for an ordinary consultation room to open or for a routine appointment to be approved. This guide helps organise access to care; fortunately, a table cannot diagnose you.

When choosing a home, it is useful to check the hospital journey on a weekday evening. Distance in kilometres does not capture narrow roads and busy junctions. For a family with children, this belongs in the location decision alongside the school run.
Questions to ask before buying insurance
| Check | Why it affects the decision |
|---|---|
| Duration and territory | The policy must match the actual trip and its extension conditions |
| Direct billing or reimbursement | Determines whether you may need to pay first |
| Excess and limits | Shows your share of the costs |
| Existing conditions and regular medication | Do not assume coverage without written confirmation |
| Sport, driving and required documents | Check the conditions for your activities and vehicle category |
| Contacting the assistance service | Save the number and instructions for urgent situations |
These are questions to ask, not a claim that every insurer has identical exclusions. Travel insurance and a policy for long-term residence can have different terms. Comparing only the final premium is rather like choosing an apartment by the price of its key.
Ask for written answers on unclear points and keep the full policy wording. “Everything included” makes a short, attractive advertisement. A medical bill can be considerably longer.
A reserve without an invented “average bill”
I have not inserted a supposed standard price for an operation or consultation: without a diagnosis, department and list of services, it could create false confidence. For planned care, request an estimate and ask whether it includes the doctor, tests, medication and facility charges.
It is more useful to calculate access to funds. If your policy requires you to pay first, a 50,000-baht reserve against an assumed 80,000-baht bill leaves a 30,000-baht gap. This is an arithmetic example, not a treatment-cost forecast. Check your available balance, card limit and reimbursement process.
- Save the policy, assistance number and passport details offline.
- Prepare a list of medicines by active ingredient, along with allergy information.
- For a child, keep vaccination records and a second adult’s contact details.
- Know who can help with transport, your child or your dog if you need to attend hospital.
Preparation need not make you anxious. It clears some space in your head: the number is saved, the process is understood, and you can get back to ordinary life.
