Fashion business / The 2026 update
Prada bought Versace. What actually changed—and what comes next?
Fashion loves a dramatic headline. Corporate structure, admittedly, is less glamorous than a Medusa clasp—but in this case it explains rather a lot.

Prada Group completed its Versace acquisition on 2 December 2025. Pieter Mulier became Versace’s Chief Creative Officer effective 1 July 2026. Miu Miu did not buy Versace; it is another house within the same group.
Three dates, without the rumour filter
| Date | Confirmed development |

The distinction matters: an agreement, a completed acquisition and a creative appointment are different events. A September article should not recycle the closing announcement as if the transaction happened this morning. Fashion moves quickly enough without us giving the calendar an unnecessary makeover.
Prada Group, Prada and Miu Miu are not interchangeable
The buyer was Prada Group. Versace remains the name of the acquired house; Miu Miu is not the acquiring brand. The appointment announcement says Mulier reports to Versace Executive Chairman Lorenzo Bertelli. source ↗ source ↗
My reading is that ownership and creative identity deserve separate attention. A parent group can provide a shared business structure while its houses still need distinct reasons to exist in a wardrobe. I would not want every brand in my cupboard to arrive at the same conclusion. Variety is rather the point.
What happens aesthetically should be assessed through published collections and actual products. An appointment is evidence of who has the role. It is not evidence of what every future bag, print or campaign will look like.
What I would watch before buying the narrative
- The first collection explicitly credited to the new creative leadership.
- How the house handles recognisable codes across clothes and accessories.
- The experience and product selection in boutiques over time.
I would resist buying a piece solely because a change of ownership makes it sound like a future collectible. Buy it because the proportion, material and character work for you. The purchase can be emotional; the justification need not involve predicting an auction catalogue.
A new chapter is interesting. It is not automatically a reason to buy another handbag.
